Janmashtami or Krishnashtami festival is celebrated all over India by Hindu as the birthday of Lord Sri Krishna. Janmashtami also known as Gokulashtami. Lord Sri Krishna was born more than 5000 years ago in Mathura at midnight of the Astami tithi in Krishna paksha of Shravan month as per Hindu calander so the Astami is a celebrated as Krishna Jayanti. This year the Janmashtami is on 2nd September, 2010. Devotees offer Sri Krishna Puja at home and distribute sweets as Prasad. Lord Krishna took birth to kill the evil king Kansa and free the people of Mathura and other nearby area from his cruelty and save them from his evil clutches. Krishna is a son of Devki and Vasudev. Vasudev brought him to Gokul at house of Yashoda Maiya and Nand baba to protect from the evil king Kansa.

All over India as per the regional tradition, different cultural programs are organized all through the day, to celebrate the birth of Lord Sri Krishna. People observed fast on the day and the fast is broken with the prasad at midnight after the aarti of Lord Krishna.

This year The Raksha Bandhan is on Tuesday, 24th August, 2010. Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi festival and it is celebrated across India. On this auspicious occasion, sisters prays to God for the safety of her brother and ties a rakhi or a holy thread on his wrist. She also presents sweets to her brother which is specially prepared for him. The Brother accepts the gesture and he also promises to protect her and gives gift like jewelery, saree, accessories and cash to his lovely sister. It is not necessary that sister ties only to her blood brother, she can tie the rakhi to her cousin or a good friend.

There is many stories behind the Raksha Bandhan festival. One of the popular story of them is about Lord Krishna and Draupadi. Once, Draupadi had tied a strip of cloth from her Saree to stop the blood from wrist of Krishna. After that, Krishna had given a promise to protect her and he saved her from being disrobed by Dushasan in the court of Duryodhana.
